A Beautiful Retreat

A desire for an “open plan” has been a key factor in remodeling for years, however, options in how homes are used and enjoyed are shifting and there is something very special about having a unique space set apart from the rest of the home.

The homeowners of this 1965 rambler desired a stylish space that would be a tranquil antidote to the rest of their home’s active open plan living. An extra room just off the entry was the perfect candidate and the vision was cast to transform a neglected and plain space into a beautiful retreat – a sophisticated library where both the solace of an excellent read or a gathering of friends for a book club and a cocktail can be enjoyed.

The result is a striking aesthetic composition of custom crafted rich walnut bookcases and gorgeous wall tiles with metal patina surrounding a flush wood burning insert. The new floor in the library both compliments and balances the dark wood of the cabinetry and is carried throughout the entire main floor,  including the entry, hallway, dining, kitchen, and family room. This keeps the library a unique retreat but also brings a sense of continuity within the rest of the home which proves to be an important design consideration.

An outstanding feature of the library is the absence of an entertainment screen making the space perfect to focus on quality time for good conversation or getting engrossed in a riveting novel with a cozy fire blazing in the sleek wood stove insert.

Library BEFORE

Prior to the remodel, the homeowners only used this space when absolutely necessary and it housed mismatched furniture. Now the homeowners thoroughly enjoy this special get away room where the atmosphere, including the custom cabinetry, color scheme, and furniture positioning encourages conversation, offers abundant space to display book collections, and provides a comfortable spot to relax, read, and reflect.

Library AFTER

Not only did this remodel transform the living space in this home, but VanderBeken Remodel received the 2020 REX/T-REX Award for the category: Get Away Room & Specialty Space Excellence for less than $50,000. Curious what the REX/T-REX Awards are?  They are awards presented annually by the Remodelers Council of The Master Builders Association of King & Snohomish County, the oldest Remodelers Council in the nation.  Entries were judged on aspects like (but not limited to) aesthetics, workmanship, and budget considerations.
