3 Benefits of Jobsite Cleanliness

Home renovations are notoriously dusty, dirty and debris-ridden. With framers, plumbers and electricians working around each other on a tight time frame, it is difficult to keep things clean and tidy.

In fact, one of the main reasons people are unhappy during a kitchen or bath remodel is they have been living in a very messy construction site. At Vanderbeken Remodel, we understand that mess and disorder is not only unpleasant for the homeowner, it creates safety hazards for workers too. We always prioritize a clean work environment for both our homeowners and our crew – it is safer and more efficient.

1 – Schedule

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations require every job site to be cleared of debris at the end of every shift. However, for maximum efficiency the site needs to be maintained throughout the course of each workday. As project managers, it is our responsibility at Vanderbeken Remodel to set the standards of organization for our crew. Setting a high standard shows our team members that we care about their safety.

Clean up is the least fun part of the job, so it is not surprising that some contractors push cleaning tasks aside. But a messy job site makes a project take longer and makes problems more difficult to solve. Over the years we have learned that setting a high standard for cleanliness and organization at the start of a project makes it much easier to finish projects on time.

Sweeping, vacuuming and removing trash are not the only clean job site tasks. Subcontractors are responsible for securing any equipment left on site, and for keeping tools organized. The constant activity on a fast-moving home renovation means items are being delivered almost daily. Vanderbeken’s team members have to organize delivery and storage for a long list of items:

      • Lumber for framing and subfloor
      • Doors and windows
      • Drywall and tile backing board
      • Plumbing components
      • Light fixtures
      • Flooring
      • Decorative tile
      • Wallpaper
      • Bathtubs and sinks
      • Cabinets and hardware
      • Range hoods
      • Appliances

Delivered tile waiting to be installed

Since most of these items are delivered to a small space that is under renovation, keeping the site clean and tidy is very important. Every step of the remodel is planned in advance, with items being delivered only as needed. It is a level of organization that is challenging, but we know the results are worth it.

2 – Safety

Our commitment to safety protects both our clients and our crews. A poorly managed home remodel accepts waste and debris as a “normal” part of remodeling. Lack of proper job site maintenance is a bad habit that is guaranteed to create safety hazards. A clean, organized job site has several safety benefits:

      • Prevention of trip and fall accidents
      • Adequate space for crew members using tools
      • Reduction of dust in the air
      • Room to safely carry heavy appliances or materials
      • Safe storage areas can be created for tools and equipment

When we maintain a clean job site, our crew feels more comfortable and secure while working. They never waste time looking for tools or materials, and they do not have to navigate around piles of trash and debris. Working to prevent accidents improves morale – and it reduces the risk of liability for everyone involved.

3 – Satisfaction

HEPA Filter Negative Air Machine

A well-maintained construction site not only looks better, it provides peace of mind for our clients. Making an effort to control dust and removing debris daily makes it much easier for you to live in your home during a renovation.  One of the ways VanderBeken Remodel goes above and beyond in this area is to run a HEPA Negative Air machine along with plastic protectant to cut down on dust and debris.  These negative air machines utilize HEPA filters to provide cleaner negative air pressure on our job sites and also keeps dust from circulation through the whole house.

Floor and countertop protectors

Additionally we put down ramboard (on hardwoods, LVP and tile floors) and plastic protectors (on carpeted floors). We do this to eliminate the use of tarps which are a major trip hazard.

When costly items are delivered you can feel confident they will not be damaged while waiting for installation. Lost or damaged items can wreak havoc on a budget! With our fixed-priced model, these costs are Vanderbeken Remodel’s responsibility. Replacing damaged materials can delay a project too. So it is in our best interests to make sure your bathroom, kitchen or whole home remodel is managed at the highest level of efficiency.

Here at Vanderbeken Remodel we specialize in turn-key home remodels. What does that mean? It means our team handles everything from start to finish, so you can relax and enjoy your new bath or kitchen design. We have long-term relationships with Snohomish County’s top tradespeople, and they understand the standards of safety and cleanliness that we expect for our clients.
